Atmel Releases Universal Transponder Micromodule With 1 Kb Memory

HEILBRONN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2001--Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML) announced today a new read/write transponder module based on its standard transponder TK5552. With a thickness of less than 400 um, the new micromodule T5552 enables simple, fast and cost-efficient tag assembly for use in cards such as contactless ISO cards for access control or standard coins for industrial applications, e.g. inventory control.

The T5552 is a universal read/write device for battery less identification systems with a 120 to 134-kHz magnetic field. The new module provides extended memory size (1024 bits) and outstanding flexibility regarding modulation modes and data rates. An internally mounted 435-pF capacitor is included. It operates at bit rates of Rf/16 and Rf/32, Manchester and PSK modulation are supported. The low current consumption allows the customer to create a transponder with extended read/write range.

This new module makes assembly much easier and cost-effective since less process steps are necessary compared to standard production with die. For tag assembly, only an external antenna has to be added.

``Soon after having introduced the well-known identification device e5551 in micromodule package, we are now proud to announce a new micromodule with 1 kb of memory that further extends our broad family of RF identification ICs,'' said Torsten Mann, Marketing Director for Automotive and Control products at Atmel Wireless & Microcontrollers Division. ``In addition to the sophisticated features our IDICs® offer, this new product provides a further step in rationalization which enables our customers to drastically reduce both assembly cost and time.''

Samples and a full qualification package are available now. Pricing for the T5552 starts at $0.57 (10 k). To support the system designer, a demo board with updated demo software and a design guide including application hints are available.
